You will be picked up at the well-known Hotels in Paramaribo around 08.00am. From here we leave for Albina. The journey takes about 3 hours. From Albina we leave by dugout canoe to the neighboring country French Guiana, St. Laurent du Maroni. It is best known for the the book Papillon. From 1852, the first 6000 prisoners from France were shipped to French Guyana to serve their sentences in the local prison, including the well-known Papillon. St Laurent is very popular due to the well-known “Papillon” who spent his days within the walls of the penal camp. This prison was used until 1946 and is now used as a museum, where guided tours are provided daily 11am-12pm. During this tour you will learn about the history and other places of interest. After the tour we walk past some shops, the market where various communities sell their products. After this short walk we will enjoy a delicious French lunch. After lunch there is still time to visit the old buildings because of their architecture. Saint-Laurent is nicknamed “Le Petit Paris” because of its colonial architectural style. We walk back to “Old St. Laurent” on the boat to Albina and back to Paramaribo.
