2. Bakkie Museum

Plantation Reynsdorp (Bakkie) is a former coffee plantation dating back to 1744, featuring old locks and buildings. Situated on the right bank of the Commewijne River, it was the last inhabited plantation and was divided among old contract workers, primarily Javanese, around 1900. The Bakkie Museum houses an extensive collection of old bottles, prints, maps, paintings, utensils, and many original books. Notable items include the original diaries of J.G. Stedman (1799), Benoit’s picture book (1823), Blaeu’s map (1630), documents on the abolition of slavery (1863), a branding iron, leg shackles, a WIC chocolate mold, Dr. Sophie Redmond’s referral letter, Maria Sibylla Merian’s print (1719), and other significant documents like the Act of Recognition of Suriname (November 25, 1975) and the law abolishing slavery signed by King William III. 3. Fort Nieuw Amsterdam

Located at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers, Fort Nieuw Amsterdam was built in the 18th century, with the first stone laid in 1734. The fort was constructed to protect the flourishing plantations and hinterlands while supporting Fort Zeelandia. Built as a pentagon with five bastions, its remnants are still visible today. The fort later served as a prison and has functioned as an open-air museum since 1968, with the buildings now serving as an administrative center. The canals, picturesque locks, and remnants of old plantation houses are silent witnesses to the once dynamic district. Located in Moengo, northeast Suriname, the Contemporary Art Museum Moengo was established by the Kibii Foundation, chaired by artist Marcel Pinas. It opened on July 30, 2011, on Abraham Crijnssenlaan and also holds exhibitions in the Tembe Art Studio in Moengo. The museum showcases works by Marcel Pinas based on black-brown culture and features works by artists-in-residence at Tembe Art Studio as well as independent artists.
